Database Administrator : Jobmax

This role is responsible for the insulation, configuration and administration, monitoring and troubleshooting of all test and production databases in the Bank. The incumbent of the role will be required to ensure the availability, reliability and performance of databases make sure that Bank staff can access the system without any issues and serve customers accordingly. They may also participate in delivering key business
-related project initiatives associated to the infrastructure. The role has a sizeable impact on the Bank, as communications and data are vital to the Banks continued success and the business will be at risk if core channels and core banking systems are unavailable due to database issues. The main areas of responsibility for this role are as follows (in order of importance): 1. Database Availability: Tasks involve the administration and configuration of databases; troubleshooting; and liaising with the application support team, network team and system support team to ensure uptime of the network; and problem
-solving, occasionally escalating issues to the vendor for support, e.g. Oracle or Microsoft (MS). (50%) 2. Service Delivery: The role incumbent is required to ensure that the capacity and performance of the database is available in order for customers to use all applications at all times; they are also responsible for managing the performance and capacity of this database, e.g. make sure the database responds efficiently and performs as per user expectations. In addition, they will also be doing regular performance tuning and maintenance checks to ensure this performance. (20%) 3. Compliance & Security: The role involves making sure the databases comply with all relevant security standards, thus ensuring proper controls/rights are in place for users and administrators. The incumbent will need to apply the right levels of relevant service patches and packs, in accordance with Bank and best
-practice policies and standards. (20%) 4. Back
-Up/Disaster Recovery: The incumbent will need to ensure that production databases are backed up to external media and replicated to the DR (Disaster Recovery) site, ensuring business continuity in case of Bank
-wide disaster, e.g. replication of Flexcube core banking and alternate channels to the Ajman DR site. (10%) Decision Making: This role involves the following:
• The role incumbent should either escalate to or partner with the relevant 3rd
-party vendor when dealing with/diagnosing any database
-related problems
• They are able to seek information and/or guidance from the vendor in order to make an informed decision, e.g. Oracle or MS
• The incumbent should not make any unscheduled or unauthorised changes to production systems without prior approval from the Head of IT, Head of Systems Development, or Head of IT Operations
• They will be required to display initiative when faced with issues that appear to have no visible or inherent impact on the Bank or customer services, e.g. database tuning, truncation, etc.
• Poor decisions are likely to have a significant impact on the Banks operations and services, e.g. database downtime resulting from a bad decision could lead to all Bank channels being unavailable, thus affecting customers ability to carry out any fund transactions
• The incumbent will be required to interpret and implement existing policies and procedures, e.g. executing information security policies. Problem Solving: This role involves the following:
• Problems are likely to be database
-related, e.g. server unavailability and database corruption could be a result of severe deterioration in database performance, and so on
• Problems are likely to be variable in nature but occur infrequently, e.g. users complaining about delay in the reports
• The incumbent should expect to spend 20
-30% of their time resolving such issues as detailed above, but are largely expected to spend most of their time ensuring optimum performance of the database
• They should escalate any issues that they are unable to resolve after carrying out a root
-cause analysis or when approval is required to perform certain activities, e.g. diagnosis of a user symptom is not possible, such as slowness in application
• Direct guidance will come primarily from the roles line manager (Database Manager), the Head of IT Operations, and occasionally the Head of Systems Development and/or the Head of IT; however additional direction may be sought from peers and/or vendors when resolving problems. The role incumbent requires the ability to:

-box” thinking at times, e.g. when the user may complain about an application issue, which in fact could be due to a database
-related problem
• Possess good diagnostic skills, which will be necessary to identify the root cause of a problem after establishing the symptoms, e.g. the core banking …
